When he gets there its 95 F with 90% humidity, but Satan notices he's kicked back on the brimstone relaxing comfortably. He asks, "Why aren't you miserable like everyone else here?" The farmer replies, "Oh, this is like a warm spring day in southern Arkansas. I like it."Angry, Satan turns up the thermostat until its 100 F and 95% humidity. Still, the farmer's happy. "This is like a good June day on the farm. Not bad at all."Furious, Satan turns it up to 105 F and 99% humidity. Everyone is even more miserable, except the southern farmer still resting."Hey, this is like a good August day on the farm bailing hay. Feels good, the hotter the better. "In a total rage, Satan turns the thermostat down to minus 25 F. Within seconds, the air becomes chilly and frost appears, soon followed by solid ice everywhere. Satan smirks, watching the farmer. The confused farmer looks down at the frozen ground for a moment, suddenly jumps up excitedly, looks around everywhere and begins to laugh, scream, and jump for joy."HOUSTON NUTT WON A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!" It has been 6 months since I have posted a blog. Where has the time gone? What have I done? Well, the biggest accomplishment was marrying off our oldest child and gaining a beautiful daughter-in-law. We also took another trip out to California. Other than having my purse stolen, it was a great trip. We came back through Utah, which was absolutely beautiful. I spent a weekend away with friends doing nothing but scrapbooking. I took a full-time job at a local community college, a decision I still debate. Terry and I took a 4 day trip to the beach in Florida for our anniversary.

But now it is football season, and I am once again caught up in the thrill of victory and agony of defeat. My Hogs are 0-2 in conference, and I fear that will kill McFadden's chances in the Heisman race. But today should be a gimme game and so I will be heading to War Memorial Stadium in my Razorback red. Go Hogs!

C. She is a friend of Kaitlin's from the Rep. She is 16 and developed bacterial meningitis while on Spring Break. Please keep praying for her. Thank you, Kathy

Allison has shown signs of trying to wake up! It really is a miracle. Just five days ago the doctors told her family there was "no hope". Thank you so much for your continued prayer. The doctors conducted more than 20 tests yesterday on Allison and they are still giving her blood. She is extremely weak on her left side and the doctors think she might have had a mild stroke when she had her seizure last week. Her mother says it's obvious that she is struggling and fighting to wake up, but she is still not conscious. If the CDC clears them to move her (and all the tests come back as we hope) they will attempt to transport Allison at the end of this week or the beginning of next week.Now... here is the next challenge and prayer request. Any and all suggestions/help would be invaluable. A private jet has been secured to transport Allison back to Children's Hospital here in Little Rock, but insurance will not cover a medical team to accompany her. They will need a doctor, nurse, possibly a paramedic to travel with Allison. Although the family has raised some money for this, it would be great if a medical team would donate their time. Please email or call me if you should have any ideas, thoughts...

C. However, I am trying to pass along a prayer request received from a friend, so I thought, just in case anyone still looks at this, I would place it here as well.

My friend Kathy, who was responsible for spreading prayer requests across the state when Wendy was so sick, sent me this information on Allison Shaw. Allison (16) is a friend of Kathy's daughter.

For those of you who haven't heard yet about Allison's condition... while Allison was on spring break she contracted bacterial meningitis and has been in a coma in Oschner Hospital in Baton Rouge for the last five days. Although she is still on a ventilator, as of the last hour, she is breathing mostly on her own. Tomorrow they will do a CAT scan and move her port from her leg to her neck so that the nurses can begin some physical therapy on her legs. Her red blood cell count is way down which is the reason for the blood drive. Once the blood is processed the doctors will give her a transfusion. There is some concern that Allison might lose some fingers or toes, but some pink-ish color is starting to appear in her hands and feet. (We all know how Allison loves to draw and dance... we should pray - not only for her recovery - but full use of her hands and feet.) She is still in a coma, but there is HOPE. Please continue to pray. I know I'm also emailing this to several people who may never have met Allison. But if you attended HOLLYWOOD AND BROADWAY ON MAIN at The Rep, you will remember her as the spunky girl with bleach blonde, spiky punk hair. Allison is definitely an original. She has a passion for theatre and is one of our big "esprit de Coeur" builders in our group. We all love her very much. Please pray for a very special young lady. And please, if you cannot attend the blood drive, please pass along this information to someone who can! Thank you so much!

They are having a special blood drive for Allison at Crews and Associates in Little Rock tomorrow. Kathy didn't have the details, but if you are interested, send me an email, and I will get them to you when they are settled.

After having been through a similar situation with a daughter, I know how important prayer is. It was only knowing that thousands were praying for Wendy that kept us going.

C. However, I did want to post these pictures for my SIL Tracy in response to a picture she had of all the baby spoons she still had in her kitchen drawer, even though she no longer had babies. I relate to her inability to get rid of baby things. I took these pictures when I was cleaning out my cabinets after Christmas. On one of my top shelves remains a container of assorted children's utensils and a stack of bowls and plates. Some of these were Noah's and Adam's so are about 24 years old. Some, I am pretty sure, were handed down from Scott, so they are MUCH older. I briefly thought of getting rid of them, but they are back on that top shelf and will probably remain there. So Tracy, you are not the only who doesn't want to deal with her children growing up too fast.

C. It is fun to do something a little different than blogging.

The week started off with me having a very nice birthday. Of course, the neatest thing was getting watch Noah make his official proposal and give Treece her ring. I can't think of a nicer present. Thanks for those of you who called and emailed with birthday wishes. Thanks also to Mom and Dad for birthday lunch.

The weather was stinking cold. Either give me above 70 or enough ice/snow that I don't have to get out in sub-freezing temperatures!

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday were spent either teaching or doing things for school.

Adam and I went to the FOCAL library sale yesterday. We got a ton of books. Now, that is all I want to do, but I'm trying not to let myself until I get the rest of the semester lined out.

Terry and I went to see Night at the Museum. I thought it was hilarious, but Terry was not as impressed.

I went with Noah and Treece to check out a potential place for the wedding - Windsong Center for Performing Arts. It was beautiful but unbelievably expensive. They are going to keep looking. However, Treece did find her dress, so things are progressing.

Wendy got her hair cut. I haven't seen it, but apparently, it is pretty short.

Well, that is my boring week in review.

C. I am so ready to get new carpet in the den. This other has been down 12 years and with 4 children, a dog, and 3 cats over those 12 years, it looks pretty rough. I have to say though that it has held up well and if the replacement carpet does as well we will be lucky.

The new year has been so nice. The weather is great, so we are not having to run the heater as much, which I am thankful for since our gas bill quadrupled last month from the previous month.

Adam has an interview for a full-time position with the library in Jacksonville today; please say a prayer that he will get it as he really needs something right now to give him some focus.

I got to spend time yesterday with Treece, her mom, and best friend Ashley looking at wedding dresses. I thought it was so sweet of her to include me. We spent over 3 hours at one shop with her trying on some really pretty dresses. She narrowed it down to 2 there, but is going to look some more. They are both beautiful, each with a very vintage look. One is very classy - very Grace Kelly; the other is reminds me of something from 1940s Hollywood - lots of lace.

I did look around at the mother-of-the-groom type dresses. It was somewhat depressing. I have SO much weight to lose! Also, most of them look so "old lady." I keep having to remind myself that I am now that "old lady!"

Hunter starts back to school tomorrow, but I don't go back until the 16th.

We used the George Foreman grill last night for steak. Wow! It did a great job. I think we are trying chicken tonight. We used it New Year's Day for waffles - something we don't need to do again for a while (about 60 pounds from now, maybe).

Oh yeah, I finally got to see Snakes on a Plane last night on DVD. I had been wanting to see it since it was on at the theaters. I thoroughly enjoyed it with the exception of the 1 sex scene and the rough language. I thought it was pretty funny.

If Hunter gave you his new cell phone number, be advised that it has changed. Cingular inadvertently gave him a number that is long distance from our home phone - not good - so they had to change it. I don't want to post it online, but if you need the new number, send me or him an email.

I plan to post some Christmas pictures soon.

Hope everyone is having a great new year!

C. Terry and I saw it in last night with Wendy, Noah and Treece - no big parties for us. We interrupted our game of Apples to Apples long enough to count down and snap a couple of pictures. I hope 2007 is as good to us as 2006 was.

While surfing the internet Saturday night when I was unable to sleep, I came across the plethora of "Top" lists that come out at the end of every year: top 10 movies, top 10 songs; top 10 albums, top 10 books, etc. Before I started looking on the lists for movies, I did a mental recall of what I had seen over the year and had to admit there weren't very many stand outs. Now I know that is because I haven't seen any of the top 10 with the exception of Cars, which some listed among the best for the year.

Anyway, out of boredom, I went ahead a made a list from my rather limited movie viewing of 2006. Because my selection was so small, I narrowed my list down to the top 5. I also included what I consider to be the 3 worst movies I saw in 2006.

Cindy's Favorite 5 Movies of 2006

5. Barnyard
4. The Devil Wears Prada
3. The Lake House
2. She's the Man
1. Cars

The Worst of 2006

3. The Break Up
2. Abominable
1. Nacho Libre

I think my biggest disappointment for a movie this year was the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel. I anticipated a movie as good as the first; it didn't happen.

C. I'm not really sure why. Perhaps it is not having small children to anticpate Santa. It was busy, but it seemed to pass by so fast. We didn't have a chance to do many of the traditional things we used to always do: looking at lights, going to the capitol, watching Christmas movies or spending hours out shopping. I especially missed not buying toys. Hunter did get three big Lego/Mega Block sets; one was the ship from Pirates of the Caribbean. He has already built two of them, so they will just set up somewhere and probably not be touched again. Last year, Noah asked for a RoboSapien, but we could not find one. I never dreamed an about to be engaged 23 year old would still want one, but he indicated he did, so I did rush out and find one. I figure it will definitely be the last "toy" I ever get to buy him.

I guess I am now officially an adult. I was really hard pressed to give Terry any ideas for what to get me. There was just not anything I could think of that I really wanted or needed. I got a portable sewing machine (for scrapbooking, not making clothes), a new coat, a bunch of scrapbooking supplies, a new robe, 2 watches, a cool George Foreman (with 5 cooking options) and a promise from husband to build these because he thinks he can build them for much less:

http://www.orientaltrading.com/application?namespace=browse&origin=catalogProducts.jsp&event=link.itemDetails&demandPrefix=12&sku=65/85054&prodCatId=377489&mode=Browsing&erec=5&Ne=90000&sp=true&Ntk=all&Ntx=mode%252bmatchallpartial&N=377489&tabId=Crafts&sd=ALL+IN+ONE+STORE+IN+STYLE+UNIT

http://www.orientaltrading.com/application?namespace=browse&origin=catalogProducts.jsp&event=link.itemDetails&demandPrefix=12&sku=65/85121&prodCatId=377489&mode=Browsing&erec=6&Ne=90000&sp=true&Ntk=all&Ntx=mode%252bmatchallpartial&N=377489&tabId=Crafts&sd=CROP+IN+STYLE+DESK+KIT

That means I might have them by next Christmas; we'll see.

It was nice to have all 4 kids home. I think it was the first time in 26 years of marriage that we actually spent Christmas eve at home instead of my parent's house. They came to our house instead, along with Terry's dad. We also had a nice visit with my brothers George and Larry and their families before Christmas and Scott and his family after Christmas.

That's it for tonight. I want to read a bit from the book I got at our book club Christmas party: The Christmas Box Collection by Richard Paul Evans. I am on The Christmas Box. I have not read anything by him before but am enjoying what I have read so far.

C. The trouble is that I really can't think of 10 movies I would consider favorites. To be a favorite, I felt it should be a movie that I would willingly watch every Christmas. As a result, I only ended up with 6!

6. A Christmas Carol - (The 1951 version)
5. The Bishop's Wife - (The original, not the remake)
4. Christmas Vacation
3. Miracle on 34th Street - (Again, the original)
2. Home Alone
1. A Christmas Story

Others I considered were Scrooged, Gremlins and Die Hard (it IS set at Christmas).

Notably missing is It's a Wonderful Life; sorry, it's not my cup of tea!

C. The semester is over, and I am grading final essays. However, I needed to get away from them for a few minutes so thought I would post a little something. I have been reading essays for the past couple of hours that discuss things like the "lesions" learned by a student her first year in college; how to apply for "finical" aid; and how the mountain "humanity" changes rather quickly. I am sure most of you were unaware that, "Even tough a mountain is quiet where there no animals, which it possible that you can relax ands chill. As a result, woods who would be the perfect place." Huh? How do I even begin to point out the problems with this? This is where I usually end up just underlining and inserting a big question mark out to the side.

I am also blown away by the email I just received containing the final essay for an English Composition I student. The minimum word count was 750 words; this student's "essay" consisted of one paragraph - why bother?

I definitely - or as my students would say "defiantly" - am in need of the upcoming 6 week break. I need to get away from teaching correct grammar and mechanics for a while since 1/2 of the population refuses to use it. I had decided to take a break last Friday and read a book. Unfortunately, I was unable to get away from instructor mode and was frustrated the entire book because some editor did not catch all the incorrect commas used with subordinating conjunctions. Things like that drive me crazy.

Well, time to go post some grades and let some students know they will be taking these courses again. Some are already aware of it, but others will be shocked. They will not understand how failing to complete an assignment that accounts for 35% of the grade for the course left them not passing. Yes, their math skills are pretty much in line with their writng skills.

C. I had no interest in it whatsoever until Terry convinced me to play a game of bowling. This is the coolest thing ever. You actually go through the motions of rolling the ball using the controller. In the baseball game, you actually swing the controller to hit the ball. The greatest thing is I actually beat Terry at bowling by 6 pins. Verbs has to agree with their subjects.
2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.
3. And don't start a sentence with a conjunction.
4. It is wrong to ever split an infinitive.
5. Avoid cliches like the plague. (They're old hat.)
6. Also, always avoid annoying alliteration.
7. Be more or less specific.
8. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are (usually) unnecessary.
9. Also too, never, ever use repetitive redundancies.
10. No sentence fragments.
11. Contractions aren't necessary and shouldn't be used.
12. Foreign words and phrases are not apropos.
13. Do not be redundant; do not use more words than necessary; it's highly superfluous.
14. One should NEVER generalize.
15. Comparisons are as bad as cliches.
16. Don't use no double negatives.
17. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc.
18. One-word sentences? Eliminate.
19. Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake.
20. The passive voice is to be ignored.
21. Eliminate commas, that are, not necessary. Parenthetical words however should be enclosed in commas.
22. Never use a big word when a diminutive one would suffice.
23. DO NOT use exclamation points and all caps to emphasize!!!
24. Use words correctly, irregardless of how others use them.
25. Understatement is always the absolute best way to put forth earth shaking ideas.
26. Use the apostrophe in it's proper place and omit it when its not needed.
27. Eliminate quotations. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "I hate quotations. Tell me what you know."
28. If you've heard it once, you've heard it a thousand times: Resist hyperbole; not one writer in a million can use it correctly.
29. Puns are for children, not groan readers.
30. Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms.
31. Even IF a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed.
32. Who needs rhetorical questions?
33. Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.
34. The passive voice should never be used.
36. Do not put statements in the negative form.
37. Verbs have to agree with their subjects.
38. A writer must not shift your point of view.
39. Place pronouns as close as possible, especially in long sentences of 10 or more words, to their antecedents.
40. Writing carefully, dangling participles must be avoided.
41. If any word is improper at the end of a sentence, a linking verb is.
42. Take the bull by the hand and avoid mixing metaphors.
43. Avoid trendy locutions that sound flaky.
44. Everyone should be careful to use a singular pronoun with singular nouns in their writing. 45. Always pick on the correct idiom.
46. The adverb always follows the verb.
47. Be careful to use the rite homonym.
And Finally...
47. Proofread carefully to see if you any words out.

C. Hunter wasn't even home. He had play practice for next week's performance of Macbeth. They had a party after practice, so he didn't even get home until nearly 10:30. We went over to some friend's house for dinner and hung out helping them hand out candy, but I just felt so empty. Another friend and I were discussing this after church tonight. Her children are grown also, so we were talking about renting some kids for next Halloween. However, after getting home, I realized I was thinking about it all wrong. Instead of renting them, I could probably get paid! Maybe I will hire out next year. I could be a Halloween nanny! Maybe I will auction off my services on ebay.

C. However, the highlight of the game had to be Keith Jackson, Jr's interception for a touchdown. To quote Hogwired.com, "Jackson provided perhaps the most entertaining play of the day when he intercepted a pass and returned it 69 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. The pick was the first interception by the Razorbacks this season and was the longest interception return for a touchdown since linebacker Jermaine Petty raced 88 yards for a touchdown against Auburn in 2001." After the touchdown, they showed Keith, Sr's reaction up in the pressbox. It was quite a special moment.

I can't wait for Ole Miss!

C. You could have pretty much given me any player's name, and I could have told you what team he was on and what position he played. I was a big Mets fan back in the days of Howard Johnson, Daryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden and Mookie Wilson. In the late 80s and early 90s, my sons got me to following the Braves as well. I was a Braves fan, unless they were playing the Mets.

I'm not sure how it happened, but I have not followed baseball very closely the last three or four years. I guess other things just got in the way. Nevertheless, this time of year is always exciting; between the fall classic in MLB and football, is there a season that is any more exciting? I love the play-offs and the series.

This year's NLCS features the Mets and the Cardinals. I'll be in the minority around here since most Arkansans are St. Louis fans, but my loyalty is with the Mets. So, let's go Mets. Regardless of who wins, I will always pull for the National League when it comes to the Series. So I'm warming up the HD video projector and pulling down the 8 foot screen; I got my replica Mets jersey out from the back of the closet; it's time to be a baseball groupie again.

C. It seemed that most fans had reconciled this game as a loss and were moving on to just dreaming about possibly winning the rest of them. Apparently, someone forgot to tell the team. Even though the Hogs never trailed, I was even more nauseous through this game than I was during the overtime against Alabama two weeks ago. When we went up 10-0, I started getting feeling ill. I just kept waiting for things to go wrong. Visions of last year against Auburn kept appearing in my mind. It was not until Davis kicked the field goal to put the Hogs up 27-10 that I began to relax. It still took a couple of hours after the game for it to completely sink in. It was amazing.

Amidst all the celebrating, there was one sobering thought. I could never shoot my
wife."

The agent said, then you're not the right man for this job. Take your
wife and go home."

The second man was given the same instructions. He took the gun
and went into the room. All was quiet for about 5 minutes. The man came
out with tears in his eyes, "I tried, but I can't kill my wife." The
agent said, "You don't have what it takes. Take your wife and go home."

Finally, it was the woman's turn. She was given the same
instructions, to kill her husband. She took the gun and went into the
room. Shots were heard, one after another. They heard screaming,
crashing, banging on the walls... After a few minutes, all was
quiet. The door opened slowly and there stood the woman, wiping the sweat
from her brow. "This gun is loaded with blanks" she said. "I had to beat
him to death with the chair."

C. Treece has a cousin getting married there. Actually, the dog belongs to him and Treece together, and he (puppy) has actually been staying at Treece's house, but they are both acting as parents. I guess now they have to stay together for the sake of the dog. We have had the puppy about 4 hours, and they have already called to check on him! And in true grandparent fashion, I know I will be more than ready to send him back home when his parents get back in town.

C. There are discussions and readings all week regarding issues of intellectual freedom.

The American Library Association’s website explains the purpose of Banned Books Week:

Banned Books Week emphasizes the freedom to choose or the freedom to express one's opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them.

Being an English major and having a passion for literature, I respect the idea of intellectual freedom. That is not to say that I think every book on the list should be located in an elementary school library. Some may not even be appropriate for high schoolers. Since it was my month to choose the book for our book club, I chose to pick a book off of the list of most frequently challenged books from 1990 - 2000. I chose The Chocolate War because I had come across a review of it recently and thought it sounded pretty interesting.

If you want to know more about the list you can check it out at

www.ala.org

Most of the books are challenged based on issues of sexuality and/or offensive language. However, I did find it interesting that one of my favorite children's books, How to Eat Fried Worms, is on the list. Apparently, the argument is that the book encourages children to take part in things that are anti-social and to gamble! There is no way this book encourages such things any more than televisions shows like Survivor, Fear Factor, Deal or No Deal, etc. The book is hilarious. I got to see the play done once at a children's theater, and there is also a recent movie out that I look forward to seeing.

Of the list from 1990-2000, I have only read 13 of the books. Two are on my "to read before I die" list. There are some I would never read, but many more that I would consider. Although there are several I would prefer my children not read, I would much rather them partake in the active thinking required with reading than the passiveness of watching television.

C. Although not pretty, we still came out with the win, and we will take it any way we can get it. Even though the weather looked rough as we left North Little Rock and we drove through some pretty heavy rain, by the time we got to Fayetteville, the sun was shining and it ended up being a pretty day. The game was a nail biter, and there were a couple of times I thought I was going to get sick. It was like we kept trying to give Bama the win, but they just wouldn't take it. The ending was exciting. It was obvious trying to leave the stadium that hardly anyone (I do know of 2) left early from this game. It took us an hour to get from the stadium to the interstate. But the ride home is much more enjoyable discussing a victory!

Mustain to Cleveland - 2 true freshmen

Davis for the win!

C. I have a 9 day break before the next begins! Wow, the workload is intense, but I do enjoy it; it just leaves little time for anything but taking care of family and the classes I am teaching. When you add football season into the mix, it makes it even busier. Since Hunter is an 8th grader, he has Monday night games and is required to dress out for all the Junior High games on Thursday night. There are 50 something boys on the team, so his playing time in these games in non-existent, but I still feel like I need to be there.

My daughter turns 19 today! Happy Birthday, Priss! I love you!

Concerning the Razorbacks - still a little nervous about things. Thankfully, we beat Vandy (although some debate the term "beat" considering it more of a gimme), but I'll take it. Saturday's game against Alabama will be big. I'm glad it is in Fayetteville.

Thanks for your prayers for baby Max. Please continue to remember him, John and Kelly in your prayers and ask God for a complete healing for Max.

I really want to get back to my Route 66 postings. I enjoyed looking back over our 4 trips down the Mother Road until schoolwork interfered. I hope to get back on that next week. Most everyone in the state is a Razorback fan. We tend to be possessive of anything having to do with the Hogs and that includes the “voice of the Razorbacks.” Paul’s association with the Hogs meant he was a part of the collective family of Razorback fans. Because of that, many of us lost a part of our family on Monday night. I have seen and heard more grown men break down into tears than I have ever seen before. The tributes have been amazing. The interesting thing is that none of them has to do with Paul the sportscaster; they are all about Paul the giving, caring, selfless person. One of the best stories I heard was from Paul’s longtime friend Harry King. King related about golfing with Paul one afternoon. As he usually did, King put his keys and wedding ring into his pocket before beginning play. When they finished for the day, King pulled out his keys but no ring. Thinking it fell out when he took out his keys, King and Paul looked around for it for quite a while before King finally gave up and told Paul to forget it; he was not even sure that he lost it around that last hole. King related how he went home and told his wife about losing the ring and they decided to go back and look some more. Even though about 45 minutes had passed when they got back up there, they found Paul on his hands and knees still looking for the ring.

The funeral will be today at the Robinson Convention Center. They are prepared for a crowd of 3,500 people. They are blocking off a 6-block area around the center. State flags are flying at half staff upon decree from the governor. I have been out this morning and seen many flying their Razorback flags on their cars and numerous people wearing Razorback or red shirts to honor Paul in their own way. Surely, Paul Eells had a major impact on the state of Arkansas. However, what has been made plain is the things that made Paul Eells so special are the everyday things that any of us can do: helping a friend look for a ring, taking the time to stop and help two women who were broken down on the side of a road coming back from Fayetteville in cold, rainy weather, giving a homeless man $5, etc. People are remembering these things just as much if nor more than “Paul’s Calls.”

C. If you are interested in Route 66, he has posted some pictures from our latest trip down 66 that we took this past May. There are some other more personal links, such as pictures of our daughter's 16th birthday party and an account of "the trip of '03," or as I refer to it, "the dream vacation that turned into a nightmare." He plans to finish out this trip, whereas I had planned to combine all our trips into one look at 66. The way these 2 doctorate courses are going, he will have his finished long before I get out of Illinois!

Anyway, check him out at...

http://www.terrylbeck.com/

C. The neatest thing was for Wendy and Hunter to see one of the old gas pumps with the gas tanks on the top.

C. One of the neatest things to see on this stretch of 66 is in Wilmington. We stopped at the Launching Pad Drive-In, home of the famous Gemini Giant. The Launching Pad was opened in the 60s. The story goes that the name is in reference to the early days of the U.S. space program. The Gemini Giant is a former Muffler Man who has been fashioned into a space helmet wearing, rocket holding tribute to NASA's Gemini program.

It was early when we arrived, and the drive-in was not open yet. However, the owner was already there and graciously invited us in to look around. He spent some time telling us about the history of the restaurant and apologized that he wasn't cooking yet, but he did let us buy t-shirts and take all the pictures we wanted. The inside of the restaurant is decorated in a 66 theme, even down to the table tops. It is a neat place to see. And what could be better than getting your picture taken with a giant spaceman?

Interior shot of the Launching Pad Drive-In

C. There is so much to see and do in Chicago, but it is so busy. It took us forever to get from one place to another. On top of that, it was freezing! For the most part, we settled for drive-bys. We did go to the top of Sears Tower, and we spent about an hour watching them film a scene for The Weatherman starring Nicholas Cage in front of the Chicago Board of Trade building. In the movie, the scene lasted about 10 seconds. But, we did get to see Cage walk down the street. See what I mean about cheap thrills. We also saw Wrigley Field, the Buckingham Fountain, Navy Pier. For the Route 66 enthusiast, Chicago is home to Lou Mitchell's diner. The diner has been open since 1923. It is famous for handing out free Milk Duds and doughnut holes. One of the weirdest things we saw (and we take great delight in weird) is The Spindle: a big spike with about 6 or 7 cars piled on top of each other. Outside of Chicago was the White Fence Farm Restaurant. It was dark when we got there, so we only have pictures of inside. It too is a landmark having been open since the 1920s; it is famous for its fried chicken. They have a new "museum" area as well. As neat as it was to see Chicago though, we had a much more relaxed trip after we go out of the hustle and bustle.

C. It is not an easy thing to explain. I don't think traveling Route 66 is for everyone. It takes people with imagination and an appreciation for nostalgia. It is not that we are special or more creative, we just get our thrills in a more simplistic way. Route 66 is about the trip, not the destination. It is looking at a big Blue Whale in a pond and imagining families swimming there in the 50s or driving stretches of the desert and wondering how people ever made it across during the Great Depression. It is thinking giant ketchup bottles and big balls of barbed wire are neat and getting a thrill over eating at the diner where the corn dog was invented. Traveling Route 66 is about getting off the interstate whenever and wherever possible. Sometimes that means driving down stretches of unpaved road or driving for long stretches with no food or restrooms in sight. That is the reasoning behind the name of my blog. Because of that and the approximately 25,000 pictures we have of Route 66, I thought I would post a series of pictures and comments about some of the things we have seen along the highway. These pictures have been taken over several trips from the last 5 years. Most of you will think them boring, but maybe someone out there will be inspired to get off the interstate and travel the Mother Road, Route 66.

Route 66 begins (or ends if you are coming from California) in Chicago, hence the sign denoting such above Terry's head. The Sherwood resident doesn’t see anything wrong with taking photographs of children and selling them on his Central Arkansas Photography Web site. But Sherwood park officials have for a year now declined to let Beck take photos in the city’s parks because they say they are uncomfortable with him displaying children’s photographs online. “Ten years from now, we may all be doing business like that. But right now, people are uncomfortable with doing this, putting photos on the Internet,” Sherwood Park Director Sonny Janssen said. Sherwood requires a user permit to sell food, hats or other merchandise in the city’s parks. The city’s Parks and Recreation Committee and the Optimist Club rejected Beck’s application in May, saying displaying children’s photos online is not in their best interest. “That’s a terrible reason to stop me from doing this,” said Beck, who learned about the user permit when he was told on July 4, 2005, to stop taking photos of a baseball tournament. He hasn’t been back to test the waters. Beck is part of a growing trend of photographers taking unsolicited photographs and posting on Web sites to sell online. At least two other companies operate similarly in central Arkansas, and no one has told Angie Ellis of Maumelle that she couldn’t shoot photographs in public parks. The situation also is news to members of Professional Photographers of America, who say the popularity of selling photos online has skyrocketed in the past five years. Arkansas Municipal League President Don Zimmerman said he is not aware of any Arkansas cities preventing people from taking photographs in public parks. He did not want to comment on the situation without further legal research. A message left for the Optimist Club, which runs the sports complex, wasn’t returned and no one answered other telephone calls to the club. Beck and his business partner were surprised when their application for a business permit was turned down. Beck travels to Little Rock, Maumelle and Cabot to shoot sporting events. He said he hasn’t been told to stop anywhere else. “I am sure I have the right to take these kids’ pictures,” Beck said, adding that he sold several photographs from the Sherwood event last year to parents at the game. After taking pictures at a game, Beck or his partner uploads the images onto his Web site. Although the company’s name is displayed on the pictures, the action and people in each photo are still visible. People can order multiple photos at various prices or a single 4x6 photograph for less than $5, Beck said. There’s no password required to look at the pictures on the Web site. City officials see things differently. It would be one thing if Beck was taking photographs as a hobby or selling photo packages to parents at the park, Janssen said, but online, anyone can buy the photographs, including pedophiles. The city has a responsibility to protect children, he said. Beck will be asked to leave the park if he is seen taking photographs again, Janssen said in an interview last week. Sherwood City Attorney Steve Cobb stands by the committee’s decision. The Optimist Club and the Parks and Recreation Committee followed their established procedures, he said. The city has no ordinance prohibiting someone from taking photos in city parks, but Cobb said he thinks the city can regulate people who come to city property for business. “It’s something we might need to look at,” Cobb said. Ellis, owner of Maumelle Sports, an online action sports photography company, took photos Sunday of sporting events at Sherwood parks, including a softball tournament at the sports complex. “Nobody said a word,” she said Monday. She was unaware of Beck’s history at the park when she shot the games. “It’s not against the law to put photos online. Anybody’s able to take photos over the fence,” Ellis said. Ellis, her husband and other photographers employed by the company regularly step onto area ball fields without any problem. Like Beck, Ellis said she hands out business cards, inviting parents to visit the Web site to buy photographs. Parents often request through the Web site that photographers show up at events, she said. Commercial photographers shouldn’t be treated any differently than parents snapping photographs unless the photographers are requiring special access to the field, said Stephen Morris, manager of government affairs for Professional Photographers of America. Prohibiting sports photography in public parks isn’t something Al Hopper, the organization’s director of membership, has heard of before. Photographers should respect parents’ wishes if they say they don’t want their child’s photograph taken, he and Morris said in a telephone interview last week. But that’s not a fight for the city to undertake, Morris said. Hopper recommends online sites use passwords to ensure only people who were handed a business card at a game could access the images. Passwords could reduce concerns about access, he said. A task force set up to address online crimes against children is more concerned about people posting personal information on such online social networks as Facebook, said Steve Frazier, a FBI special agent. The local office of the bureau has partnered with the Little Rock Police Department, the Arkansas State Police and other state agencies to address online child pornography and exploitation. Photographers often conduct business online and that’s not an area the FBI investigates, he said. Frazier couldn’t comment on Beck’s specific situation, but said he was unaware of any cases in Arkansas where a child was abducted after a photographer put images of the child online. On Monday, Beck said he was hopeful he could reach a compromise with the city after an alderman relayed a message to him that he could take photos if he received a user’s permit and parental permission. The alderman did not return a phone message left for him at home Monday. Janssen, who is out of his office this week, did not return a message left at his home.
This story was published Wednesday, July 05, 2006

C. The cool thing about Picasa is that under every picture is an option to blog the picture. This option automatically takes you to Blogger and inserts your picture. It is so easy. As a result, every time I see a picture I like in Picasa now, I want to put it on my blog. Hence, from now on the 1-2 people who ever see this page will be subjected to all my pictures. And believe me, I have the pictures. Between Terry and I, we took over 5,000 on our vacation in May! I think we took about 2,000 on our anniversary trip last August. Add those pictures to other trips, family events, children, etc. and it means many, many pictures. We started a book club about three years ago, and this was our third big "field trip." We read Widow of the South this past spring. Carnton Plantation, where the book takes place, is in Franklin and is available for touring. It was fantastic. We also toured the Hermitage and Belmont Mansion. We found a fabulous mall, Opry Mills, and shopped like crazy. We finished off Saturday evening by going to see The Devil Wears Prada. We attended the Hermitage Church of Christ Sunday morning before heading home. I loved the singing, all the good "old" stuff. It was a great weekend.
