Williams Picks Hogs

CAC Mustangs fans are pretty excited about this. I hope nothing changes before the signing period. The best thing is, DJ is a really nice guy. Wendy and Hunter both think a lot of him.

From CAC's website:

David Williams

Senior wide receiver/defensive end David Williams (6-4, 240) ended the speculation about where he is going to college, announcing his decision to attend the University of Arkansas Monday at the James and Bonnie Cone Auditorium on the campus of Central Arkansas Christian School. Williams will sign his National Letter of Intent and Financial Aid Agreement during the football signing period that begins in February, 2007.

Williams, ranked in the top 250 players in the nation by Rivals.com, had offers from over a dozen division I-A programs, but had said that his top two schools being considered were the University of Arkansas and Oklahoma State University. Colorado, Georgia Tech, Kansas State, Memphis, Missouri, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and several others had been in the picture as well as the University of Tennessee and the University of Oklahoma.

Things I Find Annoying...

In no order and certainly not alll inclusive

*People who have to STOP to turn right when driving

*People who don't use their blinkers

*People who litter

*People who don't think cigarette butts constitute litter

* 98% of country music

*When you have waited in line to check out at a department store and finally get up to the cashier but she stops to answer the phone and spend five minutes helping the caller!

*Buying something and then discovering when you get home that it is broken

*Political advertisements

*Razorback "fans" who leave before the game is over

Our first grandchild

Since neither of our adult sons is in a hurry to get married, much less have children, I guess we will have to be content with babysitting Noah's dog for the weekend while he and Treece go with her family to Maryland. Treece has a cousin getting married there. Actually, the dog belongs to him and Treece together, and he (puppy) has actually been staying at Treece's house, but they are both acting as parents. I guess now they have to stay together for the sake of the dog. We have had the puppy about 4 hours, and they have already called to check on him! And in true grandparent fashion, I know I will be more than ready to send him back home when his parents get back in town.

I read banned books.

Every year, PTC makes quite a deal about Banned Book Week. There are discussions and readings all week regarding issues of intellectual freedom.

The American Library Association’s website explains the purpose of Banned Books Week:

Banned Books Week emphasizes the freedom to choose or the freedom to express one's opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them.

Being an English major and having a passion for literature, I respect the idea of intellectual freedom. That is not to say that I think every book on the list should be located in an elementary school library. Some may not even be appropriate for high schoolers. Since it was my month to choose the book for our book club, I chose to pick a book off of the list of most frequently challenged books from 1990 - 2000. I chose The Chocolate War because I had come across a review of it recently and thought it sounded pretty interesting.

If you want to know more about the list you can check it out at

www.ala.org

Most of the books are challenged based on issues of sexuality and/or offensive language. However, I did find it interesting that one of my favorite children's books, How to Eat Fried Worms, is on the list. Apparently, the argument is that the book encourages children to take part in things that are anti-social and to gamble! There is no way this book encourages such things any more than televisions shows like Survivor, Fear Factor, Deal or No Deal, etc. The book is hilarious. I got to see the play done once at a children's theater, and there is also a recent movie out that I look forward to seeing.

Of the list from 1990-2000, I have only read 13 of the books. Two are on my "to read before I die" list. There are some I would never read, but many more that I would consider. Although there are several I would prefer my children not read, I would much rather them partake in the active thinking required with reading than the passiveness of watching television.

WIDE RIGHT!

These became the favorite words of every Hog fan yesterday! Although not pretty, we still came out with the win, and we will take it any way we can get it. Even though the weather looked rough as we left North Little Rock and we drove through some pretty heavy rain, by the time we got to Fayetteville, the sun was shining and it ended up being a pretty day. The game was a nail biter, and there were a couple of times I thought I was going to get sick. It was like we kept trying to give Bama the win, but they just wouldn't take it. The ending was exciting. It was obvious trying to leave the stadium that hardly anyone (I do know of 2) left early from this game. It took us an hour to get from the stadium to the interstate. But the ride home is much more enjoyable discussing a victory!

Random updates

Well, long time - no blog...

I finished up my second class towards my doctorate today, so I am feeling a HUGE weight lifted right now. I have a 9 day break before the next begins! Wow, the workload is intense, but I do enjoy it; it just leaves little time for anything but taking care of family and the classes I am teaching. When you add football season into the mix, it makes it even busier. Since Hunter is an 8th grader, he has Monday night games and is required to dress out for all the Junior High games on Thursday night. There are 50 something boys on the team, so his playing time in these games in non-existent, but I still feel like I need to be there.

My daughter turns 19 today! Happy Birthday, Priss! I love you!

Concerning the Razorbacks - still a little nervous about things. Thankfully, we beat Vandy (although some debate the term "beat" considering it more of a gimme), but I'll take it. Saturday's game against Alabama will be big. I'm glad it is in Fayetteville.

Thanks for your prayers for baby Max. Please continue to remember him, John and Kelly in your prayers and ask God for a complete healing for Max.

I really want to get back to my Route 66 postings. I enjoyed looking back over our 4 trips down the Mother Road until schoolwork interfered. I hope to get back on that next week. In the meantime, you can always check out what Terry has posted at www.terrylbeck.com.

I couldn't resist the opportunity to see what sci-fi character I was -

The time has come!

Well, we are about fifteen minutes from heading up the hill to Fayetteville! The game doesn't start until 8:00, so that should give up plenty of time to eat and mess around (around 4 1/2 hours!). I hope the Hogs do well!

Go Hogs!
